Friday Reconnect - Week One!

By Oliver Perry, Read to Them Staff

Happy Friday everyone! We hope you have enjoyed the first few chapters of Liesl Shurtliff’s Rump as much as we have. On Monday, we got to know our main character, Rump, and boy is he in a pickle. Our reading today leaves us wondering what Rump will do with his newfound power to spin yarn into gold. Will Frederick and Bruno tell the miller about his magic? Should he trade the gold he spins for food? We can’t wait for next week, when we get to see what happens!

To help get your imagination powers up and running, we have put together a Fairy Tale Starter activity. We encourage you to fill it out, have fun with it, and get creative. Remember to be as imaginative, unique, and even as wacky as you want to. When you finish, we would love it if you would read it to us on your Flipgrid page.

We believe that you can never write too much, so here are some writing prompts to take you into the weekend:

  • Rump has a very unique name. What is your name? Write about what your name means, both literally and what it means to you. Do you like your name? If you could change your name, would you? What would you change it to, and why?

  • Gran is one of Rump’s friends, but their relationship is more than that. As his grandmother, Rump goes to Gran for guidance, and she helps him see reason. What relative do you have a relationship like this with? Is it mom, dad, grandma or grandpa, or someone else? How do they help you? Write about the relationship you have with at least one of your relatives.

  • The magician Kessler turns a bit of fuzz into a mouse. What is magic? Do you believe in magic? If you could use magic to have any power in the world, what would it be? Write about it!

  • Rump discovers his hidden, magical talent in Chapter Six. He can spin gold! What is your talent? Are you good at sports, writing, drawing, singing? Whatever your talent is, write about it.

  • Rump has a donkey named Nothing and a cow named Milk. Do you have any pets? What are their names? Write about your favorite memory you have with your pet. If you don’t have pets, if you could have any animal in the world as a pet, what would it be, and why? What would you name them? What would they eat?

Stay kind, and we'll see you next week. We can’t wait to see what happens next in Rump. Happy writing!
