Friday Reconnect - SPP Week 2!

By Oliver Perry, Read to Them Staff

Happy Friday friends! Today we close the curtain on the second week of our read of The Adventures of a South Pole Pig by Chris Kurtz. In our last few chapters, there’s been a shipwreck! Somewhere in the South Pole, Flora, Oscar, Sophia, and the rest of the crew are stranded and shivering cold. How do you think the story will play out from here? Will the survivors be rescued? Will Flora end up a frozen piglet? Let us know your thoughts!

We’ve got a tasty twist on the frigid cold of the South Pole for our activity today. Click the video below to watch the wonderful Read to Them staff member Sara give instructions on how to make your very own sugar icicles! Have fun making freezing ice into a sweet treat!

To keep your brains warm, here are a couple writing prompts to snuggle up with over the weekend.

  • Write a story about being stranded somewhere other than the South Pole. A deserted island? A remote jungle? Choose a place, things you would need, how you would survive, and include some unique characters.

  • If you were stranded somewhere freezing, like the South Pole, what three things would you bring? Explain why in a few sentences. You can draw the things you would bring too!

  • Instead of hearing from Flora, Oscar, or Sophia, let’s hear from a real person! Write a paragraph from the perspective of one of the stranded sailors. Give them a name, and make up a story about them. How are they feeling about being stranded? Who do they miss? Be creative!

  • Add another animal to the trio that’s stranded. We’ve got a dog, a cat, and a pig, so choose another wacky animal. Choose their species, their name, and include some interesting things about them. How do they get along with the rest of the group?

  • Flora wants to be a sled pig. Write about what other animals you think would make good sled pullers. Write about at least three animals, and make sure to explain your choices.

We are so excited to find out what happens to the stranded animals in the last week of The Adventures of a South Pole Pig. We can’t wait to read along with you all then! Until then, be safe, be kind, and enjoy your weekend!
