Character Spotlight: Owen
by Kayla Aldrich, Read to Them staff
Hello, all! Happy Monday - and welcome back to your last with the unforgettable cast of Because of the Rabbit. Don't fret, though! We've still got some goodies in store for you before the read is done. As we dive in, we thought we'd get to better know a character that's been in and out of the spotlight since the novel's beginning:
Owen
Name: Owen
Home: Owen lives in Maine along the border between the United States and Canada.
Family: Owen is the oldest of two children - Emma is his little sister, who he loves a great deal. They live with their Mom and Dad, as well as with two Golden Retrievers and a (temporary) pet rabbit, Lapi.
Grade: Given it's stated that he's four years older than Emma, it's assumed that Owen has just started the ninth grade.
School: Until the previous year, Owen was homeschooled with Emma. He really wanted to know what it was like to go to public school, and so his parents allowed him to enroll.
Personality: Owen is friendly and kind. He's attentive to Emma; for instance, when he understands that she's overwhelmed, he'll have her answer which of her feelings are pulling ahead in a race. For all their lives, Owen has made sure that Emma doesn't feel left out... even if, as they grow older, Emma feels like there's a distance between them.
Interests: Now that he's in public school, Owen has developed a number of new hobbies - he does theater and he plays the right field on the baseball team. Lately, he's made the varsity soccer team, which is impressive given that it's primarily made up of junior and senior athletes. He loves skiing and kayaking, especially if he gets to do it with Emma.
Notable Quote: "I don't think I'd want to go backward for good, though. I'd miss some 'now' things."
