Read to Them
Character Spotlight: Mom & Nick
by Chloe Grant, Read to Them staff
Hello friends, and happy week two of our read of Stella Díaz Has Something to Say by Angela Dominguez! We’ve had so much fun reading this wonderful novel with you all so far, and we’re looking forward to the next week together. Last week we got to know the main character, the one and only Stella Díaz a little bit better. This week, we have a double whammy! It is our pleasure to introduce two very important characters in Stella’s life…
Mom and Nick!
Mom
Stella’s Mom is a very special mom! She is well known around the Díaz household as a phenomenal cook. Some of her specialties are e-spaghetti and albóndigas (or meatballs). In fact, her cooking skills are magic to her two children, Stella and Nick. Mom is a very hard worker. She works every day in an office, which means she can only make her fabulous dinners on Fridays and weekends. At the office, you can catch Mom wearing work clothes and high heels. But around the house, Mom likes to take it easy in an oversized T-shirt. Mom is bilingual, meaning she can speak two languages perfectly: English and Spanish! Sometimes she even speaks both in the same sentence! Mom only rarely gets mad, and she never takes sides. She is very loving and fair. She is always interested in what her kids have been learning at school, and the hobbies they have.
Nick
Nick is Stella’s older brother. He is in the eight grade, and Stella thinks everything you get to learn in eighth grade seems really interesting. He is a pretty stellar older brother (most of the time). He walks Stella to school every day, and always leaves her with a “Bye, sis” and a pat on the head. Although he is kind to and protective of his little sister, whenever Stella hears him snicker, she knows he is up to no good. Lately, Nick has been acting like he is too old to play with Mom and Stella, but he secretly still likes being silly. The smirk always gives it away. Nick has many friends, but Stella’s favorite is Jason. This year, Nick is playing basketball with the eighth graders! Stella misses walking to school with Nick. You can tell just how much she loves her older brother.
Now that we've gotten to know the whole Díaz family a little bit better, who is your favorite member of the family? Would you like to visit the Fantastic Time Machine with them?
